We’re not sure why these iconic muscle cars are changing hands so often these days, but if you’ve ever wanted to own a piece of drag racing history, you need to get to Kissimmee, Florida for Mecum Auctions’ January event. The auction takes place January 16th-25th, and one of the main attractions is the ’70 Chevelle known as “Red Alert.” The Chevelle was originally purchased by Bob Hamilton, and sponsored by AMT, the model car company. AMT even made a 1:25-scale model of the car, and the model became the company’s all-time best selling kit.

The reasons for the car’s prominence are two-fold. First, the car is a factory LS6 car, rated at 450 horsepower in 1970. That alone is a big deal. Second, the car held the SS/DA record in 1972, and won 14 of 16 events in 1976 at Bradenton Dragway, now affectionately known as Bradenton Motorsports Park. The car ran a best-of 10.75 at 123 mph back in the 70s.

After its performance reign, Terry Carney purchased the Chevelle. Terry simply held on to the car for many years, but later resurrected the car for duty in nostalgia-type events. Reportedly, the “Red Alert” is now good for low-10s at over 130 mph.

Now it can run low-10s with you at the wheel. The “Red Alert” Chevelle is more than just a car; it’s a piece of drag racing history. The original LS6 is still in the car, and the Chevelle is as Bob Hamilton raced it back in the day. The sheetmetal and interior are original, and the majority of the car’s paint is, as well. But wait, there’s more. “Red Alert’s” original bill of sale, build sheet, Protect-O-Plate, original pictures, and even Bob Hamilton’s helmet comes with it.

Now how much would you pay? Get to Mecum, raise your hand, and find out.
