Rick Thornton has been a longtime hitter in the small-tire drag racing game, including numerous seasons in Outlaw 10.5 with his immaculate and fan favorite 1965 Corvette. Over the past two seasons, Thornton and crew chief Grant Mccrory have been running on the 315 Drag Radials in a quest for radial supremacy. Thornton’s classic Chevrolet, packing a Reher Morrison small-block punch, thundered onto the scene and became a near-instant hitter, with 4.0-second elapsed times early on. With a few racers under their belts, the team of Thornton and McCrary were full-on frontrunners, and at No Mercy 6, they became the quickest turbo team on radials to date with a 3.95-second blast.

img_2661_1024As the 2015 season came to a close, the tough decision was made by the Fast Forward Innovations team, based out of Texas, to sell the record-holding Corvette and make the move to Pro Modified. But, not exactly any Pro Mod. The plan is to bolt radials on the team’s 1969 Camaro, completely built by McCrary himself and compete in Radial vs. The World.

In our talks with McCrary, the plan is to stick with their tried-and-true small-block, twin turbocharged combination in the new sleek Camaro platform. While the Corvette holds the turbocharged record for now, he points out that the RVW class is headed in a direction where he feels the Pro Modified chassis at his disposal will be a slight advantage on the field, even with the slight weight penalty.

Over the past few days, the team has posted their legendary Corvette for sale on numerous outlets, including Facebook. With a fresh Reher Morrison motor, twin Precision turbochargers, a Bruno/Lenco transmission and a Neal Chance converter on board, this car is completely ready to go. If you’re looking to make the jump into the quickest and fastest class on drag radials in 2016, this car should definitely be on your purchasing radar; and at a reasonable price for a complete turnkey race car of this caliber, you could end up the winner’s circle sooner rather than later.
