Rig Of The Month: Flying A Motorsports Volvo Toterhome by Haulmark

As the official trailer/motorcoach dealer of Dragzine, Flying A Motorsports’ extensive lineup of new and used motorhomes, toterhomes, racecar trailers, stacker trailers, car haulers, and cargo trailers are highlighted here in the monthly Rig of the Month feature.

When you offer acres of new and used haulers and trailers, there are numerous new and used options offered by Alan Cape at Flying A Motorsports to fit pretty well any budget and application.

In the last few months, Flying A has been featuring new rigs and trailers while citing various brands and their individual strong points. This month, they’re showing off a 2008 Volvo chassis toterhome by Haulmark. When you walk into the rear entry door of this rig it appears to be a new hauler — it’s actually used, and very gently used at that.

“The entire hauler has only 81,000 original miles, including the Volvo 485-horsepower diesel engine and computer-shifted transmission,” Cape adds. “The Volvo I-shift is a computer-controlled shift of the durable Volvo manual transmission. I like this shift setup as it’s very smooth.”

The walk-through bathroom functions much like a mudroom. You can change from the days' racing clothes before retiring to the spotless interior which offers a flat screen TV, surround sound, and satellite dish viewing.

Even with the relatively low miles, you can convince your friends with the overall condition of the interior and exterior that you have a new hauler for going to the races. Cape adds, “This drivetrain does not complete its break-in cycle until 75,000-miles which makes her essentially new.”

“We sold this unit a couple of years ago, and it’s been traded in for resale,” Cape describes. “This rig has an unusual floorplan. It’s a 17-foot toter which is very standard, but this one features an interior layout with a rear entry door around the rear fender wells.”

Cape notes the interior layout based on the rear entry door afford many more living and sleeping conveniences than any other toterhome layout. The permanent ladder indicates the useful walk-on roof option.

“”It sounds odd, but this bathroom is more of a mudroom where you can clean up and change out of the days’ dirty clothes before entering the living quarters,” says Cape. “It works out pretty slick because you gain two facing sofas that expand with a 12-foot slide-out along with the dinette to provide additional sleeping arrangements.”

Combined with the bunk area over the Volvo cab, Cape explains that this layout can sleep more than nearly any typical toterhome design.

From the nice amenities to the sleeping loft over the Volvo cab, this rig will fool you that it is not a brand new toterhome.

Another example of its light use, the truck is equipped with an Onan 10KW Generator that shows only 30-hours on the meter. Other operational equipment includes a pair of 75-gallon fuel tanks and a 40-gallon propane tank mated to a Suburban LP system.

“The kitchen has a two-burner cooktop, microwave, Norcold RV-style refrigerator, and a single bowl kitchen sink,” Cape tells us. “The Volvo is also filled with a wealth of entertainment, like a Sony flat screen television fed to surround sound audio, a Tracvision satellite system, and a Dish satellite receiver.”

With only 81K on the odometer, this toterhome has barely completed the Volvo break-in cycle. The Onan generator also has a mere 30 operation hours on its meter.

Someone will score an impressive toterhome for their 2019 racing season. Whether it be to combine with their current trailer or match to the wealth of race trailers also on the display lot at the Flying A dealership location in Cuba, Missouri, this is the classic description of a used truck value combined with new truck appearance.
