No doubt about it, the news right now is being dominated by Street Outlaws. Earlier we shared with you another follow-up story on the television ratings of the popular Discovery Channel program that illustrate just how well the show is doing in the only real department that matters to the bean counters. Well it seems the dynamic of the show and the numbers it’s drawing in are enough to elicit interest in spinning the show off into another program under a similar premise.
According to officials at the Milan Dragway in Michigan, Discovery Channel and Pilgrim Studios producers are currently seeking out talent for what could be a spinoff or companion program to the Oklahoma City-focused Street Outlaws program in the Detroit area.
Producers are reportedly searching for and taking information from interested parties with the quickest and fastest street cars in the Detroit area, and as we understand it, the region boasts some pretty impressive street racing machinery.
This news, of course, won’t be met positively by the NHRA brass in Glendora, who voiced their displeasure with the street racing program this week by issuing letters to all of the members of the cast and virtually everyone associated with the show to cut their ties with the show or lose their privilege of competing at their sanctioned racing facilities.
With the show’s season typically just eight weeks in length, it’s possible that Discovery Channel producers are looking to fill in the gaps to provide the show — and it’s impressive ratings — with more continuity throughout the year. We’ve reached out to the producers for comment and hope to have more information in the coming days.
What are your thoughts on the possibility of a second version of Street Outlaws with a whole new cast and new race cars?
