As the television numbers show, a large majority of America’s gearhead population has made Street Outlaws a part of their weekly television routine. While the show can be divisive, if not controversial, at times, the benefit to the sport of drag racing is obvious to anybody willing to look past that whole street racing aspect. And while most purely enjoy the show, there’s one sticking point with its actual production that really has the audience hung up, and especially the more hardcore car guys and gals: the multiple camera cuts that make the actual races, likely five seconds or less in almost all cases, drag out to fifteen or twenty seconds or longer.
While we don’t claim to know what the general television audience likes, the gearheads are quite vocal about how unrealistic this is, mainly because it makes the cars seem much slower than they actually are and takes away from the melodious sounds of a nitrous-fed big-block, a pair of turbos, or a blower.
Thankfully, one of the guys who helped the 405 crew catch the eye of Discovery execs, Robert Chapman, still goes to many of the race nights and captures the races in a raw form from behind the scenes. Chapman, known to most as Big Rob, was uploading videos from the streets of Oklahoma City long before the cameras rolled into town, and his videos do a great job of showing you just how quick these cars plant the tires and get down the street.
Check out these clips of some of the highlights of the season finale Cash Days race. As most of you know, Kye Kelley once again defeated all-comers, taking out “Daddy” Dave Comstock, racing Mike Henson’s Corvette, in the final to walk away with over $50,000 in cash.
