In the fast-growing segment of factory race cars from around the world, there’s always room for one more. While General Motors has had a strong platform in the Corvette line, the once-abandoned Camaro has still struggled to get back to what it once was on the street and the strip. With Ford and Chrysler easily taking a commanding hold on the market with the likes of the Mustang and the Challenger, the engineers at Chevrolet have put together a new race-only Camaro that can be had with 550 horsepower from the factory.

Dr. Jamie Meyer of GM Performance Parts was recently on hand at the ADRL race in Martin, Michigan to grasp first-handcwhat the SuperCar Showdown had to offer.

According to a reliable source there are several of the COPO Camaro’s in production around the Detroit area and we will likely see the very first car roll off the assembly line sometime in August. Dr. Meyer states that several future owners have expressed interest in competing in races like the ADRL SuperCar Showdown that’s been dominated by the Brand “X” Mustang, as he calls it.

With three different option packages available, owners can choose their engine and whether they want forced induction or a 427 cubic inch naturally aspirated LS7 under the hood. Meyer also states that “right now is a golden age of muscle cars” which we couldn’t agree with more as the factory muscle cars wars have been rekindled. Who would have guessed that 50 years later we would be reliving the era when the muscle car got its start and there would be a flourish of competition across the board from the big three in the automotive industry. We’ll just have to wait and see which brand can prevail as the king of the modern day muscle car era.
