Tylor Miller Ready To Take On PDRA Pro Boost Class At Darlington

A drag racing career rarely ever follows a linear path; it’s filled with ups and downs, and sometimes it has stops and starts along the way, too. For PDRA Pro Boost racer Tylor Miller, his doorslammer racing career has been filled with many great moments and has been on an upward swing since he jumped behind the wheel of the Pee Dee Fleet Chevelle. In 2017 Miller is looking to make a move towards the top of the ultra-competitive Pro Boost field in the PDRA, and he plans on using the Spring Nationals at Darlington Dragway as the springboard for his march towards the title.

Racing has always been a family affair for Miller both on and off the track. Four years ago Miller took a break from the sport to help his wife during her pregnancy and be there when his son was born. It was toward the end of that period that his father approached him with an interesting opportunity.

“After my time off my dad came back to me with the news that he had a deal lined out with Andy McCoy Race Cars to create a team car and he wanted me to drive. I was super excited to get a new car … it was the first one I ever had that was professionally built,” Miller explains.

The McCoy Chevelle that Miller drives is currently powered by a Brad Anderson-based 526 cubic-inch Hemi with MBE Heads. Providing the boost is a class legal supercharger from Hammer Supercharger, and all of that is backed by a Liberty transmission with a Ty Drive and Neal Chance lock-up converter. For 2017 the team has made some upgrades to the chassis, suspension, and electronics that are really showing some promise. This potent package has pushed Miller deep into the 3.70s in Pro Boost trim.

This season has been a bit challenging for Miller and his team at times, but they’re fighting hard to keep their title hopes alive.

“This year we’ve had some hiccups trying some new things, like a cam in testing before the first PDRA race that just didn’t work. At PDRA Georgia race I was able to qualify third and make it to the semi-finals before the converter broke. We had a rough time at GALOT, only qualifying ninth, and going out the first round against Melanie Salemi when the car shook the tires hard,” Miller says.

It’s not just about the winning for Miller, though, as he enjoys the competition of the Pro Boost class and believes that any round win you earn in the PDRA is something special.

“With all of the tough teams in Pro Boost like the GALOT cars, Jose Gonzalez, Melanie Salemi and others, you have to push yourself all the time. It comes down to who works the hardest, does the best R&D, and has the smartest people working with them. With the level of talent in the PDRA, if you can even make the Pro Boost field you’re one of the select few best Pro Mods on the planet, for sure.”

There has been a bit of controversy this year in the Pro Boost class due to rule changes. After the GALOT team dominated the class in 2016 with their blower combinations some rules were adjusted to bring more parity to the class. Now, the turbo cars seem to be taking over and Miller has his own thoughts on how to even the field out again even with the most recent rule adjustment that adds weight to the turbo combinations.

“You’ve got a couple guys with turbo cars that have got it figured out and they’re making power, but there are others that just still struggling. I don’t think weight will slow them down, I think it will make them faster because they can turn the boost up and just add more fuel. If they really want to limit the turbo cars, they need to do what the NHRA did and limit boost, because they can make double the boost the blower cars can,” Miller says.

You can see Miller take on the Pro Boost field in his quest for a PDRA title at Darlington Dragway May 18-20th when the PDRA Spring Nationals roar to life.
