Sticking with what you’re good at and becoming the best at it is on outstanding way to turn on a boat load of win lights in drag racing, or in the case of Scott Porter Racing, set a bunch of records. The crew at SPR is known for building some insanely fast Nissan powered hot rods and has added more hardware to the trophy case with their VQ35 swapped RX-7. This Mazda and Nissan hybrid broke records not once but twice at Willowbank Raceway, running deep into the seven-second zone.
The VQ35 mill is very stout and has been a proven platform for SPR over the years in their Infinity G35, running in the low six-second range. Their use of the Nissan mill also spread to their team’s dragster that has been as quick as a 6.68 with a pair of turbos.
At the Willowbank Winternationals, the SPR-backed RX-7 owned by Phil Laird and wheeled by Matt Lisle did some serious damage. The fearsome “FB” RX-7 known as “Goldmember” went a on a tear at the event and eventually won the Super Compact class. While it was making rounds, the Nissan-powered FB clicked off a very spirited 7.79 elapsed time at 187.57 mph with Lisle really having to wheel the car on the front half of the pass. Later on a solo pass, SPR put the big boy tune up in the RX-7 and ripped off a 7.678 at 193.68 mph on 26 x 8.5-inch tire with a 1.29 sixty-foot and 5.12 to the eighth-mile — that’s making some serious steam on the back half!
