Video: 700 HP Pontiac G8 Grenades A Motor At The Strip

When you take your car to the drag strip, no matter what you race, there’s always the possibility of parts failure. Some might say the more power you’re putting down, the more that risk goes up, but that doesn’t necessarily always ring true. Not everybody is going to blow up a motor in grand fashion like John Force in the early 1990’s, but there is that chance your car won’t leave the racing surface under its own power…or make it home without the help of a wrecker. The guys from 1320 Video were at the 2013 Bayou Drags in Houston and just happened to catch catastrophic engine failure as it happened to a nasty boosted G8.

g8The Pontiac G8 was based on the Holden Commodore from Australia. G8’s had a very short run of only two years here in the United States. You could pick up this four door grocery getter with a V6 or the LS3 V8 along with a manual or automatic transmission based on the trim package. But with the death of Pontiac, the G8 went away, but not after sparking interest in V8, rear wheel drive, four door cars again.

The G8 in this video is not your standard grocery getter. This car, according to the owner, is sporting a stock motor being fed some boosted air from a ProCharger. Making a stout 700 horses at the wheels on only 10 pounds of boost, the car had been a best of 11.16 in the quarter mile on soft wall drag radials.  What makes this car even better is the fact it’s a street car with a baby seat in it. The problem is that on the car’s last pass the motor decided it didn’t like how it was being treated. As you see the car blast into the traps a whole bunch of white smoke pours out, and that’s never a good sign. The driver had entered the world of “race car problems” and windowed the block, but on the bright side, she did win some money.
