This weekend’s IHRA Summit Pro-Am Tour event at the Richmond Dragway in Virginia had more than its share of carnage, with two devastating, rollover crashes that were caught on film by the crew at MotorManiaTV, which was running a live feed of the weekend’s activities online.

The first incident involved Top Sportsman competitor Nick Womack in his big block Chevy-powered 2008 Cobalt. Womack was running in the left lane during qualifying when his mount began to make a move just beyond half track. Womack fought to keep the car under control, but eventually crossed over the lanes in front of of his opponent — his wheelie bars mere inches from the nose of the other car — as he turned nose-first into the guardrail. The angle of impact sent his car over onto its roof as it slid into the shutdown area, turning over once more before coming to rest. A small fire ensued, bur Womack was fortunately unharmed in the incident and climbed from the car under his own power to assess the damage.

Later, during the opening round of Super Rod eliminations under the lights, racer Marvin Napier’s roadster made an immediate left turn at the 330-foot clocks (possibly from something broken in the suspension or driveline), turning into the guardrail. Napier’s car bounced up against the wall and rode down its length beyond the finish line before it made another sharp turn across the track, turned over, and barrel-rolled roughly six times over the wall into the grass.

Napier was quite fortunate to walk away from such a nasty crash, given the very dangerous nature of an open-top race car on a steel guardrail.
