Video: Bumper-Dragging Wheelstand Ends In Brutal Crash

In what can be summed up as merely a string of bad luck circumstances, there have been more than the usual share of spectacular grudge racing crashes this spring at tracks all across the country, and it doesn’t seem that trend shows any sign of slowing down. And while the same certainly can’t be said for all of the tracks in question, many of the facilities are well-regarded, well-prepared surfaces fit for cars of any performance range.

One of those more recent incidents came at the Cecil County Dragway in Maryland, when the Fox body Mustang known as the “Junk Yard Jerm” smacked the wall incredibly hard not once, but twice, doing some extensive damage to the car.

jyj1The incident was preceded by a huge, bumper-dragging wheelstand that the driver powered his way out of. From that point, the car begins to drift out of the groove toward the centerline until just beyond the eighth-mile, when it makes an immediate left turn — suggesting perhaps that something in the suspension or even an axle failed — sending the car careening into the guardrail with impressive force.

After riding down the wall into the shutdown area after the initial impact, you can see the car turn away from and then slam nose-first into the wall a second time with either the throttle hung open or the drivers’ foot stuck on the throttle pedal, before finally coming to rest.

Fortunately, and as always, most importantly, the driver was reported to be uninjured, but the same could not be said for the once-immaculate race car. Video man BigKleib performed a walk-around of the car following the accident to illustrate the damage, which left the nose and drivers side in near irreparable condition.
