It was quite an eventful weekend of racing not just in the states, but around the world. In addition to Phil Lamattina’s frightening Top Fuel crash in Australia, a pair of FIA Top Methanol Funny Car racers were involved in a wild excursion at the Tierp Internationals at the Tierp Arena in Sweden that left one driver injured and both race cars worse for wear, if not completely destroyed.
Leif Andreasson (right lane) was racing alongside Mikael Larsson during qualifying for the Internationals when Larsson’s machine crossed over the centerline right into the path of Andreasson’s flopper near the 200-foot mark. The two made heavy contact, with the impact sending Andreasson careening out of control, immediately turning his car upside down before it struck the guardrail.
Larsson’s car also struck the opposing guardrail after the initial impact, but remained upright. Andreasson was reportedly unharmed in the accident, while Larsson was transported via helicopter to a nearby medical facility to be treated for minor injuries.
