Nostalgia nitro Funny Car competitor Dan Horan, Jr. went for the wildest ride of the young season at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, California on Friday.
Horan was racing as part of a nostalgia exhibition prior to Friday’s opening session of nitro qualifying when the parachutes on his Chevrolet Camaro-bodied flopper failed to blossom at the close of a 5.65-second, 262 mph pass. As the Fairplex features the shortest shutdown area on the NHRA Mello Yello Series trail, Horan’s valiant effort to slow his machine were for naught, as he plowed through the sand trap and into the catch net, ultimately ending up twisted in the netting and on his lid.
Fortunately, with the assistance of the the NHRA Safety Safari, Horan was seen emerging from the battered Camaro uninjured.
