If you happen to enjoy your afternoon coffee with a little splash of nitro, then we’ve got just what you need to get through the end of a tiring workday, with plenty of old school cackle.
The fabled World Series of Drag Racing, which is the sport’s oldest continuously run drag race – yes, even older than the NHRA U.S. Nationals – was held for the 58th consecutive years over the weekend at the Cordova Dragway Park in Illinois, where fifteen classic Nostalgia Funny Car battled it out for the title at one of their premiere annual events.
Dallas, Texas native John Hale led qualifying in his Mike Mike Burkhart tribute ’69 Camaro flopper, recording a 5.777 at 249.44 MPH. Anchoring the eight-car field was Mike Savage, who towed from Tucson, Ariz. with his Candies & Hughes Barracuda at 6.09. Several strong-running contenders, including Troy Martin, Joe Haas, Randy Baker, Mike Lewis, and newcomer Marc White were all spectators as eliminations got underway.
In the second round of eliminations, Hale met up with points leader Paul Romine, who had carded a stellar 5.79 in round one. Not to be outdone, Hale blasted to low ET of the event with a 5.67 at 251.72 MPH to Romine’s nonetheless consistent 5.79. Hale was to meet Anthony Bronge and his “Punisher” Camaro, but insurmountable engine woes in the semi’s prohibited Bronge from making the call and handing an easy one to Hale.
Courtesy of our good friends Eric and Shane Boyungs at 1800 Entertainment, who were at Cordova filming all weekend long, we bring you all the cackle you can handle, with nearly 45 minutes of footage featuring the entire Nostalgia Funny Car program from the 58th annual World Series of Drag Racing. Enjoy!
