PDRA Pro Stock racer Justin Kirk was unhurt in a wild opening round crash of Extreme Pro Stock eliminations at the Drag Wars event at the GALOT Motorsports Park in North Carolina on Saturday.
West Virginia native Kirk, driving his 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier, qualified 20th in the 12-car field with a 4.11, earning himself a raceday matchup with Frank Gugliotta. With an .039 to .057 edge out of the gate, Kirk was charging hard when his Chevy got crossed up, went across the centerline, and turned onto its roof.
Whether by skill, luck, or some combination of both, Kirk’s machine spent time in both lines, was briefly upside down, turned back onto all fours, and never so much as scraped a concrete retaining wall, marking it one of the most gentle rollover crashes we’ve ever witnessed. Kirk even drove the car to a stop, and while it may need a new roof, nose, and front suspension components, the incident could have been — and often is — much more devastating.
