Video: Roy Hill Hangs The Hoops, Hits The Wall At Indy

The most high-flying NBA players in the game would be envious of the kind of hangtime that drag racing icon Roy Hill is getting this week in Indianapolis.

The longtime drag racing school instructor from North Carolina is competing in both Stock and Super Stock at this week’s NHRA U.S. Nationals, and just a day and half into the six-day event, he’s already graced the highlight reel twice. Actually, he probably IS the highlight reel.

During Wednesday’s opening rounds of qualifying, Hill stuck the nose of his FS/B 2013 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Stocker in the air on a qualifying hit opposite of Marty Buth and hung them there until just shy of the 330 foot mark. The problem was, the Mustang wasn’t headed down the center of his lane, but rather, straight for the centerline. Somehow, Hill missed the 330 block, but crossed over right in front of Buth and cruised on down the lane, rendering Buth’s pass null and void.

Whatever changes were necessary to keep the nose on Hill’s car down for the opening round of class eliminations this morning weren’t on the checklist, however, and Hill once again went into low-altitude orbit. This time, though, the Mustang went right instead of left or straight, and after climbing up onto just one wheel and crashing back to earth like a bull at the rodeo, took a pretty nice lick with the concrete guardrail.

And he does it again, this time...not so pretty. LOL.

Unfortunately, the end result was Hill not making the 128-car qualified field, with just a 9.21 best. That, of course, is insult to injury with the damage to the right side of his Mustang.
