The Texas Raceway in Kennedale kicked off the new year with a bang on Saturday with its rescheduled Redemption 4.0 no-prep series event, featuring some of the biggest names in all of no-prep, grudge, and street racing from around the country. No-prep racing, while growing wildly in popularity over the last several months, has also drawn its share of criticism from drag racing purists over the dangers the style of racing poses. Those opinions have been further fueled by a rash of major incidents at events across the country that have claimed a number of top-flight race cars of late.

With the high temperature at Kennedale hovering in the upper 40s and peaking at 50 degrees on Saturday, combined with the unprepped racing surface, those in contention had quite the challenge on their hands to navigate the slippery 1/8-mile. Unfortunately, that dicey mix of weather and track conditions claimed a couple of race cars, and most notably, the big-tire Chevrolet Camaro of local favorite Spencer “Cornbread” Johnson.
Johnson was racing alongside Street Outlaws star (and central figure in the new Street Outlaws New Orleans spinoff show) Kye Kelley in the second round of eliminations, when he lost control of his mount near the finish line and, in the process of attempting to save the wayward Camaro, ended up on his roof, barrel-rolling several times before coming to rest upside down in the shutdown area. Most importantly, Johnson climbed from the car uninjured, but the same could not be said for his ride, which suffered heavy rear end and roof damage in the end-over-end excursion.
