When the season finale for a racing series rolls around, the possibility for drama on the track is always high. Racers will push their cars to the absolute limit since there’s no tomorrow wanting to end their season on a high note. The 2016 NMCA World Street Finals had some great on-track heroics from competitors like Mike DeMayo and Jacky McCarty who won their series title’s in head-to-head races, but there were also some scary moments for racers Chad Neuenschwander, Georgina Buckley, Mark Malcult, and Lorenzo Brooks who all had their season end with mishaps on the drag strip.

Friday night during NA 10.5 qualifying, Neuenschwander went for a frightening ride in his Mustang at the top end of the track. As Neuenschwander went through the traps at over 140 mph, the car drifted left and then made a big move to the right. After Neuenschwander’s machine made contact with the wall, it erupted into flames from the oil line rupturing. Neuenschwander was not hurt and plans on making a comeback to the NMCA next season.

Street Outlaw driver Georgina Buckley also had big problems on a bye run during eliminations on Sunday. After her nitrous-fed Mustang crossed into the shutdown area, the car veered hard to the right and struck the wall with force. Buckley was taken to the hospital with broken ribs and a concussion.
Mark Malcult and Lorenzo Brooks also had an incident at the top end during Top Sportsman qualifying where Brooks’ car ended up on its roof. Malcult had just gotten his Camaro back from the chassis shop after it had been in an on-track accident earlier this season.
Thankfully, all of the drivers were okay after the safety gear did its job and the staff at Summit Motorsports Park, along with the NMCA acted quickly. We wish all the drivers the best and hope to see them back at the track in 2017.
