You just never know what you might go down at a small-tire drag race, and that’s exactly the reason why many of these events have become standing room only affairs — to witness cars with smaller tires and bigger motors and power adders than they have any business with, doing completely unpredictable things.
And sliding down the racing surface on your driver’s door? That’s definitely unpredictable. Note that we didn’t say unexpected…just unpredictable.
Texas X275 racer Justin Curry did just that last week at the North Star Dragway in Denton, Texas during a test session leading up the weekend’s Texas Radial Round Up, when his small block, nitrous-fed Camaro powered into a massive wheelstand. Curry, attempting to feather the car back down to earth rather than stepping off the throttle and smacking the oil pan on the pavement, pedaled the car several times, which kept it up on the bumper well down the eighth-mile track.
In the process of one those whacks of the throttle, however, the car finally had enough and unloaded the right rear wheel, which forced the car to hook and turn onto its side. The resulting melee saw the car momentarily sliding down the racing surface on its left side and tapping the guardrail before righting itself, eventually crossing the finish on all four wheels, just as originally intended.
Although the incident an the end result could’ve been much worse, the damage was enough to put Curry out of commission for the weekend to make repairs to the car.
