Last weekend at the Outlaw Street Car Reunion: Battle of the States event held at Memphis International Raceway, records were under attack all weekend long in the Outlaw Drag Radial class. In fact, THE Kevin Mullins lowered his own world record during the course of the weekend, running a 4.110 at well over 193 MPH in the eighth-mile. The pass in this video, shot by Hans Pierre of Free Life Films, just so happens to be the quickest side-by-side drag radial pass ever recorded anywhere in the world.
There’s not a ton to say about the pass itself – both cars hooked and went straight down Broadway, with the resulting 4.136 and 4.146 elapsed times showing up on the scoreboard, and the announcer, the one and only Al Tucci, nearly losing his mind in the process.
It’s an incredible feat to run so quickly on these tires, as the track prep has to be just right along with the conditions in order to make passes this quick. Heck, these guys are approaching the six-flat barrier if the events were run on the quarter-mile. That’s just insane by any stretch.
Drag radial racing has taken off over the last couple of years, thanks in no small part to the incredible promotion done by the likes of Donald Long’s Duck X Productions and other promoters like Monty Mikho of the Yellowbullet Nationals.
Both types of radial racing – Outlaw Drag Radial, which competes on the 315/60/15 “big” tire, and X275, which runs on the 275/60/15 “small” tire, have exploded in popularity, and as the racers who compete in both classes have been able to take advantage of the latest in electronic controls, elapsed time records drop at seemingly every big event. The next big event is at Holly Springs in just a few weeks, and we have no doubt that the Holly Springs track staff will pull all their unicorns out to be the home of the first 4.0X pass on a radial tire.
Thanks to Hans for the footage.
