As the 2014 racing season comes to a close, many top radial tire teams are rushing to get some last minute testing done to go into the off-season with their minds racing to find more horsepower and ways to put that power to the ground.
X275 veteran Ron Rhodes took his impressive Chevrolet Camaro to Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun, Maryland for a season ending test session this past weekend with hopes to gain more data going into the long winter layover to prepare for the major events to kick off the 2015 season. Rhodes has one of the most well known cars in X275 with his patented red paint scheme on the sleek Camaro packing a punch with a 23-Degree Small Block powerplant built by the masterminds at BES Racing Engines. Induction Solutions has supplied the nitrous oxide setup used to propel Rhodes to the top of the pack in this ever-competitive class.

As the test session kicked off, Rhodes checked the track and weather conditions and predicted that the possibility of a 4.50 flat was possible out of his bullet. Ron and his talented son, Ronny, made a decision on the Calvert Racing leaf spring suspension setup, loaded a heavy tune-up in the NLR Systems nitrous controller and away they went to the staging lanes.
Prime conditions faced them as they rolled onto the concrete at Cecil County Dragway. Rhodes did his normal burnout and backed into the hot rubber laid down by his Mickey Thompson Pro 275 Drag Radials. At the release of the transbrake, Rhodes’ Camaro shot off the starting line like a horse at the Kentucky Derby. Blasting to an astounding 1.038 short time, he rode out a wheelstand to near the 150 foot mark of the track before it settled back down to Earth and took off down the eighth-mile to the quickest recorded X275-legal pass in history: 4.460 at 154.86 miles per hour!
Even though the pass doesn’t count toward an official record, it’s a given — now more than ever — that Rhodes is a force to be reckoned with leading into the 2015 season. Ron wanted to thank his sponsors for their continued support and for pushing him to continue forward in the sport: Calvert Racing, TRZ Motorsports, BES Racing Engines, Induction Solutions, NLR Systems, PTC, Santhuff Suspension, MacFab Beadlocks, Hutch and Spaghetti Menders!
From our team at Dragzine, we want to congratulate the Rhodes family on a great 2014 campaign and for finishing the season off with the quickest pass to date in X275 — 4.460!
