Larry “Axman” Roach drove Stephen Brindle’s “Game Changer” Ford Mustang to its first “No Prep Kings” Great 8 victory Friday evening at the Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky, defeating his team “Daddy Dave” Comstock teammate Kayla Morton under the lights.
Roach, a veteran of the series, defeated Lizzy Musi in round one and Giuseppe Gentile in the semifinals; Morton, for her part, downed Jim Howe (driving John Odom’s Nissan GTR after his incident last weekend in Minnesota), and then edged out a dominant Kye Kelley in a titanic semifinal round matchup. In addition to the team Daddy Dave sweep of the final, it was also a banner night for Chase Driskell, who tunes the cars of both Roach and Morton.
In the final, Morton’s Mustang crept through the lights before the green light dropped, giving the automatic win to Roach before he ever left the starting line.
With the win, Roach assumed the Great 8 points lead from Ryan Martin; Morton, with her final round appearance, moved into what is now a five-way tie for second place, between Martin, Morton, Kelley, Gentile, and David Gates.
Larry Larson, Brad Eglian, Parker, Manny Alvarez, Tim Brown, Brandon James, Martin, Mike Bowman, Greg Chandler, Randy Williams, and Mike Murillo all raced their way into Saturday’s main event.
