The promising forecast for today has given way to more rain showers this morning, only serving to create a bigger mess in the pit area and the parking lots for the racers and spectators. Additionally, water has made its way under the rubber on the racing surface, which would require a 5-6 hour scrape of both lanes down to the 600 ft. mark. As a result, officials have announced that the plug has been pulled on this weekend’s festivities. The event will resume next weekend with sportsman qualifying and eliminations on Saturday and final eliminations on Sunday. That’s all from here in Indianapolis, folks!

After a long week and a frustrating weekend of rain, the race teams are packing it away until next Saturday. The postponement creates a number of scenarios - good and bad - for certain racers. The likes of Robert Hight and Larry Morgan (who is locked in a tight battle for a Countdown berth) will now have a chance to punch their way into the race-day field that was set as-is when Sunday's qualifying was washed out.

If there's anything a little rain can't stop here at Indy, it's the infamous Top Fool Alcohol Crew. As they do each and every year, this wild and wooly crew sacrificed what was undoubtedly a staggering number of brews in the campground on the West side of the track concocting this year's creation. The result is their nitro-themed covered wagon that pays homage to the pioneers of the sport -- Jim Dunn, Luigi Novelli, Don Garlits, and Chris Karamesines.

The NHRA and its loyal Indianapolis fans simply can’t buy a break. Record-high temperatures last year turned to a windy and bone-chilling race day, and this year, the remnants of Hurricane Isaac have wreaked havoc on the Lucas Oil Raceway. Just after Super Stock was called to the lanes for its first round of eliminations this morning, the rains came and as of 11:30 a.m. EST, we’re still under a delay as the wet stuff continues to come down. It’s not a downpour, but nevertheless, we’re in wait-and-see mode. Depending on your chosen source of news and weather, the forecast today calls for anywhere from a 70 to 100 percent chance of rain through later this evening.

We’re done for today. The Traxxas Nitro Shootout for Funny Cars has been postponed to a later date and the professional fields are set. Weather pending, eliminations will begin as scheduled at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. Sportsman racing will begin bright and early and will assuredly run well into the evening and possibly on Tuesday in order to get the U.S. Nationals in the books.

It’s the second day of professional qualifying action here at Lucas Oil Raceway, and if you’ve been paying attention to the forecast this week, the weather is the big story here today as the remnants of Hurricane Isaac move into the midwest region. Today’s action is set to feature to the Top Fuel Traxxas Shootout, along with two complete professional qualifying sessions. As always, we’ll be bringing you all the great news, notes, and photos all weekend long from here at the “Big Go”.

Former IHRA Pro Stock standout Chris Holbrook (pictured at left), was again one the victims of Indiana native Bo Butner’s tour of destruction this season in the heads-up factory race car wars. Butner, who has won five of the seven ADRL SuperCar Showdown races contested this season (Holbrook won at Maple Grove and Drew Skillman at St. Louis) was the odds-on favorite coming into the inaugural Factory Stock Showdown at Indy. True to form, Butner downed P.B Candies and Holbrook — on a 9.059 to 9.056 holeshot — before bouncing Brett Candies in the money round in front of the Friday evening professional qualifying crowd.

Pro Stock ace Jeg Coughlin Jr. is one of sixteen competitors remaining in Stock Eliminator after his dead-on 10.11 defeat of Patrick Downing this morning. Reigning Indy champ Jeff Teuton and another Pro Stock standout, Dave Connolly, are both still in contention for the U.S. Nationals crown.
We're currently under a rain delay as it began to drizzle prior to the second round of Competition Eliminator. Despite an ominous forecast in the preceding days, the racers and fans may be largely spared of the wet stuff today; however, Sunday and Monday may become more questionable.

The weatherman has been half right thus far, so we'll have to give him credit for that. The expected torrential rains haven't materialized, but when you're trying to run a drag race, even a moderate sprinkle brings progress to a unwanted halt. The forecast hasn't dampened the enthusiasm of the fans, however, as the professional pit area and the midway continue to fill up.

Despite persistent drizzles, it was all-hands on deck out on the Lucas Oil Raceway surface at 2:45 p.m. EST in an effort to get the drying process underway in a day-long battle against the rain. The rains hit the Clermont area at 10:30 a.m. today, marking five hours of today’s busy schedule that’s been lost thus far. Officials have already cancelled parts of today’s run-order, including all schedule rounds of sportsman racing, Pro Modified, and the Gassers. NHRA officials plan to go immediately into the first round of the Traxxas Top Fuel Shootout, followed by Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle. Presently, two rounds of professional qualifying are planned back-to-back, but could change based on the ongoing weather pattern.

Rain. Lots of slow, persistent, rain.....

Antron Brown, who added a U.S. Nationals Top Fuel Wally to go along with his two in Pro Stock Motorcycle last year, enters the Traxxas Shootout as the No. 1 seed, pairing him up with Traxxas Fan Vote winner Brandon Bernstein in the opening round. Twenty-seven Top Fuel Dragsters are here on the property at Indy -- a field that includes two-time Indy winner Cory McClenathan in the Rapisarda Racing dragster. Cory Mac is sitting just outside the top twelve in the 13th slot with his 4.00 last evening.

It was announced this week that Terry Haddock has brought journeyman crew chief Wayne Dupuy onboard his Acme Refining Toyota Funny Car on a full-time basis. Unfortunately, Dupuy and company had trouble getting the body to latch during last night's qualifying session, forcing Haddock to shut off and forgo his shot at the race track.
Dave Connolly, who debuted Victor Cagnazzi's brand new Grumpy's Toy COPO Camaro in Stock Eliminator this weekend, is making just his third start this weekend in Pro Stock. Connolly will be pulling double-duty on Sunday, as he attempts to put his IDG machine in the 16-car Pro Stock field while chasing the Stock Eliminator crown in the Camaro.

Tony Schumacher (left), who virtually owns the Lucas Oil Raceway in Top Fuel, was o the losing end of Morgan Lucas' 3.79 that not only advanced him to the second round of the Traxxas Top Fuel Shootout, but right to the top of the qualifying order. Lucas' teammate, Brandon Bernstein (center), had plenty to smile about as he drove from the No. 8 spot into the second round of the Shootout with a huge upset victory over No. 1 seed Antron Brown, 3.84 to 3.85. Steve Torrence (right, won an exciting drag race in the opening pair over Doug Kalitta, 3.83 to 3.85.
Spencer Massey was the only driver from the DSR stable to advance in the Traxxas Shootout after he disposed of David Grubnic with a 3.81 that moved him to No. 3 in the qualifying order.

It's hard to imagine a top Fuel bonus race with Alan Johnson as a spectator, but the team's early season struggles left them without a spot in the lucrative race-within-a-race. Shawn Langdon and Khalid alBalooshi are currently Nos. 6 and 4, respectively.

The ladies of Funny Car had an exceptional second session of qualifying, as Courtney Force carded a 4.10 and Alex DeJoria trailed just behind at 4.11 -- the third and fourth quickest runs of the round.
How old has the continual rain become? The expression on Allen Johnson's face during a short rain delay tells the story accurately.

Pro Stock Motorcycle is once again a battle of The Hector's versus the Harley's. Hector Sr. went low for the round with his 6.950, followed by Andrew Hines at 6.954, Hector Jr. at 6.963, and Eddie Krawiec with his 6.978. Hines remains atop the field with his 6.92 on Friday.
It was revealed this weekend that popular Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Karen Stoffer and her primary sponsor, GEICO, will be parting ways at seasons end. Stoffer is still doing her backer proud, however, as she carded a 6.99 to move herself to the sixth slot.

Morgan Lucas and Brandon Bernstein were the talk of the town after their performances in the opening round of the Traxxas Shootout, but both were eliminated in the semifinals. Lucas was on the losing end of Spencer Massey's low-for-the-weekend 3.76 that advanced him to the final, where he'll meet Steve Torrence.
Eria Enders remained atop the Pro Stock field with her Friday 6.62, with Vincent Nobile and Allen Johnson nipping at her heels.

Teammates Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown both made improvements in the third session; Schumacher regained top speed of the event with his 326 mph blast coupled with a stout 3.77, while Brown's 3.80 moved him from No. 9 to No. 5.
Courtney Force brought the house down in this evening's Funny Car session when she made the quickest run of her career - a 4.049 at 317 mph - in the final pair of cars down the racetrack to steal the No. 1 away from Jack Beckman.
Khalid alBalooshi may need his fillings checked after this massive episode of tire shake this evening.

Teammmates Mike Neff and John Force are currently sitting seventh and ninth, respectively, in the Funny Car order, while Matt Hagan, who needs a big weekend if he'll have any shot at a Countdown berth, is anchoring the 12-car order with his 4.119.
Spencer Massey walked away with $100,000 of Traxxas' money tonight after he downed Steve Torrence in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout finale under the lights. Massey was first off the starting line and never trailed as he scored the 3.780-second win while Torrence smoked the tires at mid-track and slowed.

Following the completion of the Traxxas Shootout, the third session of Pro Stock qualifying got underway, but after several slipper runs in succession, NHRA officials checked out the racing surface and deemed it unsafe to continue racing this evening. The plan is to continue tomorrow with the fourth session for Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Labor Day weekend in Indianapolis can mean only one thing: the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at the the historic Lucas Oil Raceway. Hundreds of the finest racers in the nation, from the professional ranks to the sportsman competitors, have made their annual pilgrimage to Indy for the richest and most prestigious of all drag races for their chance at immortality alongside the legends.

Clermont, Ind. (Aug. 30, 2012) – Charlie Westcott Jr. of Parma, Mich., powered to the No. 1 spot in qualifying on Thursday in his 1968 “Warfish” Plymouth Barracuda at the 12th Annual Mopar® HEMI® Challenge at the NHRA Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. Westcott Jr. banked the Mopar top qualifier $500 bonus with his second straight pole at the Indianapolis Mopar HEMI Challenge event, and will look to capture his second straight Indy win on Friday and fifth overall at the venue.

An impressive field of 23 Mopar-powered Super Stock A/HEMI (SS/AH) 1968 Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas battled it out at Lucas Oil Raceway. Westcott Jr. paced the pack with an elapsed time of 8.386-seconds in his HEMI machine. Clocking in at No. 2 was Jim Daniels of Bristol, Pa., in his 1968 Dodge Dart with an 8.458 mark, followed by Charlie Westcott Sr. in the third spot in his ’68 Plymouth ‘Cuda with an 8.488. Taking the fourth spot was former Indy Mopar HEMI Challenge champ Rick Houser of Pasadena, Calif., with an 8.491 effort in his 1968 Plymouth Barracuda, and Wendell Howes of Rathesay, Neb., rounded out the top five with an 8.510, also in a 1968 Barracuda.

“I think people were surprised when I put that .38 on the board, but I wasn’t,” said Westcott Jr. “Yesterday I had a few subpar passes. We found some adjustments in the suspension and the car went down the track really nice today.”

The Westcott family is aiming for its fourth Indy HEMI Challenge win five years. Westcott Jr. claimed victory in 2008 and 2011, with his father earning the win in 2009. Last year featured an all-Westcott final, and the father-and-son duo would relish a repeat performance.

“He almost beat me last year, because he had a lot better light (reaction time) than I did,” said Westcott Jr. of his battle with his father in the 2011 Mopar HEMI Challenge final. “He’s beat me a few times, and I’ve beat him a few times. It’s all about who makes the best runs. If the ladder works that way, it would be cool. That’s obviously ideal, to get both of these cars in the final and win as much money as we can.”

The Mopar HEMI Challenge winner will earn an impressive $15,000 purse tomorrow, with $1,500 slotted for the runner-up and $500 each for the third and fourth-place finishers.

“It’s a great deal. Mopar supporting us is a great thing, and without them I wouldn’t have one of these HEMI cars,” said Westcott Jr. “They put the money up and make it worthwhile to come out and try to claim the prize.

The elimination rounds for the 12th Annual Mopar HEMI Challenge will take place Friday, with the final round scheduled between NHRA Funny Car and Top Fuel qualifying rounds. To keep up on all the Mopar HEMI Challenge action on Twitter, follow @OfficialMopar. (Courtesy of Mopar)

Veteran driver Tony Schumacher raced to the Top Fuel qualifying lead in his U.S. Army dragster at the 58th annual Mac Tools US Nationals presented by Auto-Plus at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis during Friday’s opening qualifying session.

Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Schumacher ran low ET and top speed of the round with his 3.814 second pass at 324.67 mph under the lights at Lucas Oil Raceway which earned him the provisional No. 1 qualifying position.

“It was a lot of pressure tonight but the NHRA did a great job with the track and we got it right and ended up No. 1,” Schumacher said. “We wanted to get down the track tonight and we managed to earn the top spot. We tested here last week and we ran great and it definitely helped up tonight.”

Schumacher is tied with “Big Daddy” Don Garlits as the winningest driver at the Mac Tools US Nationals with eight wins and he hopes that starting the weekend off in the No. 1 position will lead to his ninth win at “The Big Go.”

“We’ve won this race eight times, but I’ve won one race in the last two years,” said Schumacher. “We’re just getting back to the way we used to be with the car running good. I’d rather race here than anywhere else because of the amount of success we’ve had.

“We’ve had some luck at other tracks, but this place has been so special from ’96 when I ran my first race as a kid who’d never driven a Top Fuel car in his life before and went all the way to the final. We’ve had so many great years and great moments.”

If Schumacher holds on to the No. 1 position it will be the fourth time he has been No. 1 qualifier at the Mac Tool US Nationals, fourth of the season and 70th of his career.

Beckman earned the qualifying lead during the opening round of qualifying Friday evening under the lights at Lucas Oil Raceway. Beckman recorded a 4.051 second pass at 302.62 mph for the provisional No. 1 qualifying position heading into Saturday.

“It was hugely important [to get a good first run] because now it doesn’t matter what happens the rest of the weekend,” Beckman said. “Whether we get all the qualifying runs or not, we won’t get bumped out. We are absolutely safe, and everybody can breathe a sigh of relief.”

If Beckman maintains the No. 1 position through qualifying on Saturday and Sunday, it will be the third No. 1 qualifying position of the season, the seventh of his career and first at Indianapolis.

Enders continued her recent dominance in Pro Stock with her Chevy Cobalt when she went straight to the qualifying lead Friday afternoon thanks to her 6.624 second pass at 208.84 mph.

“I really feel very honored to be here, to be able to carry the momentum that we’ve had in the last few races into this event,” Enders said. “Our goal and what we’re really focused on is winning the championship. We’ve worked really hard all year, testing, and doing R&D stuff back in the engine shop. We wanted to be able to showcase what we’ve learned during the entire year right before the Countdown and then the last six races of the schedule.”

The most successful woman in Pro Stock history is coming off her third win of the season and if she holds onto the No. 1 qualifying position it will be the second No. 1 of the season and fifth of her career.

Two-time Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Andrew Hines continued the Harley-Davidson dominance when he raced his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson V-Rod to the qualifying lead with his 6.928 second pass at 194.21 mph.

“We want to keep our streak going here,” Hines said. “I’ve won four times here in the [former] Ringers Gloves Battle so I know the way to the winner’s circle. I just need to get there on Monday. It does add some pressure to know we’ve won every race this year but we just want to keep it up.”

Qualifying for the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event continues Saturday at 2:30 p.m ET and 6 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Eliminations are set for Monday at 11 a.m.
