Last weekend, Top Fuel racer Scott Palmer, inarguably one of the most passionate men the sport of drag racing has seen in the last quarter century — and certainly big-show racing’s leading showman — did what he does best by entertaining the locals at Iowa’s Eddyville Raceday Park during the tracks’ Funny Car Chaos series event.
Palmer made a handful of exhibition runs for the fans, highlighted by a track-record rip of 3.21-seconds at 265 mph and change. That run, if you’re scoring at home, would probably sneak you into the threes to 1,000-feet, and the 4.70s at 310-plus to the 1/4-mile. Lest you think that’s just an underperforming nitro car, imagine your local eighth-mile, and someone going a whopping 265 miles per hour through the traps on it, and getting it stopped. It’s quite the spectacle, and kudos to Palmer for delighting in bringing the world’s fastest race cars right into the backyard of grassroots racing fans.
