Rig of the Month: Flying A Motorsports 44′ Gooseneck Race Trailer

As the official trailer/motorcoach dealer of Dragzine, Flying A Motorsports’ extensive lineup of new and used motorhomes and toterhomes, race car trailers, stacker trailers, car haulers, and cargo trailers will be highlighted here in a monthly feature known as the Rig Of The Month.

In this month’s installment, Flying A is featuring one of their specialized orders from Haulmark Trailer. Not only is there a unique floorplan, there are many custom features that were specially installed by their own custom shop.

This 44-foot gooseneck trailer is filled with special amenities with the drag racer in mind. “The floor plan we ordered works for a racer who wants their golf car or longer dragster or dragsters to fit within the very front of the floor area,” Randy Cape from Flying A describes. “Cabinets have been installed on the driver’s side wall rather than across the front. This also provides plenty of access to the gooseneck area.”

The triple axles are spaced wider for what racers like in ride and handling. The popular application of lowered skirting and individual fender wells on the wider axle package is favored today as well.

The trailer features an insulated generator compartment with outside door access along with a generator slide. There is a 50-amp electrical system that includes five internal electrical outlets and a 25-foot shore cord. Generator choice is left up to the customer with this trailer. “They can base their generator size on what tool or amenities like air conditioning they wish to customize on the unit,” Cape says. “A racer can easily use a 5500-watt generator instead of a 7000-watt generator because there is no load from the lighting system.”

This gooseneck trailer was special ordered from Haulmark with the ceiling raised 6-inches in height and is also custom outfitted with LED light technology. The aluminum cabinetry is arranged for extra floor space in the front floorplan.

“The interior and exterior lighting system is 12-volt technology,” Cape explains. “We custom ordered and installed the latest in super bright LED lighting inside and outside on this trailer. Combined with a power inverter and battery system included, these LED lights do not need 110-volt generator power like quartz and fluorescent light require. They can easily run on the trailer’s battery system for quite some time at a race.”

There are 11 LED light fixtures along the interior coiling of the trailer while three weather-safe LED bright strips along the trailers passenger side can light up your pits at night. The aluminum straight base cabinets and matching overhead cabinets also feature LED work lighting.

These super bright and weather resistant LED strips on the outer wall will light up your pit area without the need of a large generator.

This trailer was specially ordered by Flying A with a 6-inches of extra ceiling height. Another gooseneck feature favored by racers is the hydraulic landing gear that raises and lowers the gooseneck with the flick of a switch. “Many racers want the spread axle design we included on this trailer,” Cape adds. “The triple 6000-pound rated Torflex axles are spaced at 44-inches compared to the standard 36-inch spacing. Many racers like the ride and handling ride better because of the larger axle footprint. This unit was ordered to have everything racers like today in a gooseneck trailer.”

More details on the trailer design include .040-inch thick wall aluminum on the inside and outside compared to standard .030-inch thickness. It also features a one-piece roof, chrome front and rear wall corners, and black coin rubber floor and ramp.

“We did quite a bit of personalized work to this trailer, such as the lighting,” Cape finishes. “We have an extensive service shop here where we can also install hitches on vehicles to match your trailer purchase. We also provide the installed options of PitPal accessories, wheel chocks, electric tongue jacks, and floor mounting rings and more.”
