Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 4.11.55 PMWhether you love, like or despise the hit show Street Outlaws, there is no denying its impact on the sport of drag racing. From increased interest from a vast new audience to bringing no-prep and no-time shootouts to the everyday drag racing vocabulary, the show has generally had a positive effect on the sport we all love so dearly. Of course, while the racing on the show is held on a controlled set with professional lighting and safety precautions in place, not all “street outlaws” –intentionally left lowercase – take such precautions.

In this video, a pair of very healthy sounding classic muscle cars take to the streets, in Sweden of all places, where their spectator group shuts down traffic on what appears to be a legitimate interstate highway type of road so the pair can duke it out on the nice wide asphalt surface. Following a pair of awesome, if not overkill, burnouts, the domestic (to us) beasts square off and race a clean, close race. The winner, a blown first generation Chevy Camaro, looks to take the win over the other ride, a Plymouth Duster of the same era, by a car length or less!

Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 4.12.58 PMWhile we certainly don’t condone or encourage street racing, we understand that it has long been the root form of our beloved motorsport. As long as there have been cars, there has been street racing, and that’s not likely to change until cars are controlled by ESP. Or the government. Luckily, many drag strips across the nation open their gates to host Midnight Madness type events that cater to those who would otherwise be taking their racing to the redlights just outside of town on a Friday night. We do encourage our readers to seek out those types of events and leave the street racing to the professionals who do it in a controlled, safe environment, in spite of what they portray on television.
