The Salinas Speedway in Puerto Rico has seen more than its fair share of devastating crashes in recent years, including an incident in 2013 that tragically claimed the life of a bystander. With a lot of really fast, short wheelbase cars calling the country home and an exciting, never-lift approach to racing, things get interesting — if not completely out-of-hand — there quite frequently. And at an event at Salinas on January 31st, things definitely went amiss.

lj1That night, the 2JZ-powered Toyota Corolla known as “Little Jowin”, owned by Edwin Gomera El Cano, was completely destroyed in what was without a doubt one of the most vicious rollover crashes we’ve seen in quite a while. Prior to the crash, the silver rocketship can be seen making what is otherwise a relatively clean pass, before taking a very abrupt turn beyond half-track right into the opposing lane. Taking immediate action to avoid contact with the car in the other lane, the driver corrects back into the left lane, setting off a chain of events that ends with the car into the wall and violently turning end-over-end more times than we can count before finally coming to rest.

Merely says prior to the crash, the Little Jowin team had reset their personal bests with a lap of 6.64-seconds at 210 mph, with a 4.31 to the eighth-mile. Fortunately, Gomera El Cano and his team have already vowed to return with either a repaired race car or a new piece entirely.
