In the wildly popular X275 drag radial class, a stringent rule set keeps the competition nice and close, while pushing the competitors to scavenge for every available ounce of horsepower. While many racers are content to roll to the line with a standard wet sump oil pump in the pan, those competitors keen on extracting every available pony from their combination – such as X275 heavy hitters Rich and Nick Bruder – have opted instead to run a trick dry sump oiling system.
The Bruders selected Peterson Fluid Systems’ Six Stage R4 dry sump pump fitted with their rear-drive option handles the work of moving the oil, while Peterson’s 7-inch Drag Tank serves to contain it. The New Jersey-based racers also run Peterson’s -12 scavenge filters on the oil pan to keep debris from entering the pump, along with a 400 series filter with a reusable mesh screen filter as the main filter between the engine and the oil pump itself. These components obviously serve the very important purpose of keeping the oil clean for maximum performance and minimum risk of damage to the internal engine parts. The brothers’ turbocharged small block Ford powerplant also features a host of Peterson fabricated and billet “Y” manifolds to route all of the fluids to their destination.
With fields as tight as X275 fields often are, literally every little bit helps. Potential power gains can reach into double digit range by outfitting your engine with a dry sump system, choosing not to run one could be leaving precious hundredths of a second on the table each pass down the track. At the recent Radial Fest event held at Huntsville Dragway, the Bruder team ran Low ET of the event at 4.45 – just one hundredth of a second off the current class record of 4.44 – and won the X275 class.
Perhaps more important than the horsepower potential, the added oil control helps with durability and reliability, all while adding a considerable cool factor to the engine bay. One new product (pictured above) that was revealed at the 2014 PRI Show in December is this trick remote filter mount with a built-in engine primer. Also available is a bracket to mount the filter/primer combo to the oil tank for an ultra-clean installation!
