High horsepower applications, particularly those with power adders commonly found in racing, come with some serious power requirements from a starter, and Powermaster has exactly that in their Ultra High-Speed lineup of starters.
“This is the high-end as far as starting goes, “states Powermasters’ J.R. Richmond. “If an engine use a bolt-on starter, and one of these doesn’t crank it fast enough to start, then something is wrong.”
The Ultra High-Speed starters produce 200 ft./lbs. of cranking torque on 12 volts, and per Richmond, crank about 25 percent faster than comparable size and weight starters. On 16 volts, he says they really ‘wake up’ — and there’s no need for a 24 volt system. Powermaster manufactures these starters for a wide range of applications, including small- and big-block Chevrolet’s, Ford’s, and Chrysler’s, along with the Chrysler Hemi’s and select AMC/Jeep and Pontiac/Oldsmobile engines.
“One of the reasons that we developed this starters was for turbo applications — guys running mags on the car with alcohol. Those guys were having a little harder time starting those cars. The increased starter speed really helps those racers.”
In addition to the 200 ft./lbs. these produce, they operate at a 3.75:1 gear reduction and pump out three horsepower — enough to start cars like Powermaster-sponsored Pro Mod racer Mario Orsini’s Corvette and Danny Thompson’s 400-PLUS MPH Challenger II twin nitro-burning Hemi streamliner.
