Diehard golfers have long had lavish country clubs upon which to build their homes, step out the back door and onto the tee box, and play rounds until their hearts are content or the sun goes down. But now, in what sounds like a dream straight from the imagination of an automotive enthusiast, comes the Competition Ridge Race Ranch, a racing real estate paradise for the heavy right-footed gearhead.

The vision of designer, builder, and sports car racer Randy Lyles, Competition Ridge is a private, 400-acre residential community located in western Arizona, between the cities of Kingman and Lake Havasu, and will feature a ¼ mile dragstrip, ¾ mile paved oval, and a 1.7 mile road course. The basis of the unique concept is to buy a lot, build a home with a race shop, and race any time you want.
After 10 years of tirelessly laying the groundwork for the project, Lyles’ dream is finally becoming reality. “The time and money to test is considerable – equal to a mortgage payment. Why not live where you test? In other words, why not have a home with a very long driveway?” he said.
As an owner of one of the 5+ acre parcels within the community, you become part owner of the racing facility, and following the completion of a safety and policy course, all track time is free. In addition, Lyles states that, as part owners, members will be permitted and encouraged to conduct small racing events on the courses with non-members, which they may then collect percentages of the fees paid by said racers. The projected association fees to govern track policies and maintenance for owner-members is set at $100 monthly – far less than the four and five figure fees charged annually by country clubs.
The race courses will feature full-time safety personnel and equipment, along with a fuel truck. Many of the currently allocated number of 48 lots have already been purchased or are on reserve, showing that the interest from the public is certainly there. Even famous car buffs the likes of ‘Late Night’ host Jay Leno have expressed interest in the facility. The complex is currently undergoing final infrastructure work, and the road course – which has already been laid out on the desert property – is set to begin the paving process in early April. The drag strip and oval are slated for construction later in the year.
