Nearly two months after receiving word that Alan Johnson’s move to John Force Racing was a done deal, the decorated Top Fuel crew chief has finally made it official, revealing on Friday to the NHRA on FOX crew that he would indeed be helping turn the wrenches on Brittany Force’s Monster Energy dragster in 2016. Johnson’s interview followed month’s of speculation, which he previously had confirmed, albeit unceremoniously, yesterday via Twitter.
Johnson, who has won 11 NHRA Top Fuel world championships with five different drivers as a crew chief and team owner, will return to the tuning role after fielding his own championship-winning team from 2009 through 2015, winning a pair of titles in that span. Brian Husen, who most recently tuned Shawn Langdon’s dragster and helped propel Del Worsham to the 2011 crown, has joined the Monster Energy team, as well.
As was widely speculated, the JFR Top Fuel team will transition over to Alan Johnson Performance Engineering (AJPE) parts in 2016, providing Johnson and Husen with a platform and a combination they know all too well.
Johnson shares that he received a call from JFR Funny Car crew chief Mike Neff late last year asking he had interest in helping them with the Brittany’s dragster in 2016. A meeting between Johnson, Force, and Robert Hight resulted in a deal that suited all parties and brought one of the greatest tuners of all-time together with Force for the first time. “We came to some sort of agreement that should work, and I think we’re all excited about trying to get Brittany her first win,” Johnson says.
