Alepa Racing Lays Down Strong Times With FuelTech FTSpark

The amount of horsepower that racecars are able to generate today is mind-boggling, and keeping that power sustained requires serious spark in the combustion chamber. Earlier this year, FuelTech introduced their FTSpark ignition modules to help racers who are making big power keep their cars running at the highest level.

FuelTech products have found their way into the fastest racecars all over the world. The company has been working hand in hand with top-level engine builders and tuners from around the globe to help build some amazing cars and break records. FuelTech’s new ECUs and other electronics have opened Pandora’s Box when it comes to performance and racers are now starting to harness the tuning abilities the company offers. These videos show just how performance-oriented the company has become and how much they want to help racers go fast.

Recently, the team from Pro Line Racing did some testing with Andrew Alepa’s C7 Corvette that uses the FTSpark ignition box in conjunction with one of their Hemi-based engines, and they were able to generate some impressive numbers out of the 4,000-horse beast.

The FTSpark was developed by FuelTech based on racer feedback about their SparkPRO ignition system. FuelTech took what they learned and created a powerful Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) system that is designed for engines making high amounts of horsepower. The 600mJ (mJ=milijoules) of power the FTSpark cranks out to the coil hits hard with 125 amps of current. That power output allows the FTSpark to keep just about anything lit, including the big cubic-inch Hemi in the Alepa Corvette that feeds on a heavy dose of methanol for fuel.

In this video from FuelTech, members of the Pro Line Racing braintrust, Eric Dillard and Steve Petty, talk about what the SparkPro is capable of. Previously, Alepa’s Corvette used a magneto to provide the spark to the engine but it wasn’t always reliable. After making the switch to the FTSpark, the team is already seeing the same level of performance with the added bonus of better spark plug readings. This wider tuning window pushed the Corvette to a 3.78-second pass at 210 mph with room to turn it up more.
