The average full-size truck on the road in the United States can easily weigh well over 5,000 pounds…not a small vehicle by anyone’s standards. Imagine taking a vehicle that big and pushing it into the 8-second zone with a full interior.
Andrew Makkinga pulled off that feat with his boosted 2004 Dodge Rumble Bee pickup.
Makkinga purchased the Rumble Bee when he was just 18 years old. The truck was bone-stock at the time, but that quickly changed as he started to add bolt-on parts to improve the truck’s performance. The bolt-on’s helped, but they weren’t enough for Makkinga, and he kept upgrading the truck until it reached its current form.
Makkinga’s truck is now powered by a forged 6.1-liter HEMI that receives boost from a pair of turbos (and wastegates and blow-off valves) from Precision Turbo & Engine. Behind the engine is a TH400 transmission and Dana 60 rearend. A set of Chassisworks’ VariShocks and Mickey Thompson tires help put the power down to the surface of the track.
Makkinga traveled from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada with his Rumble Bee to participate in the Modern Street HEMI Shootout event at Orlando Speed World Dragway. The goal that Makkinga set for the trip was to just go quicker than his personal best of 9.57. Makkinga laid down a 9.66 off the trailer, which gave him data to make some suspension and tune adjustments before he made another pass. The changes paid off — Makkinga ran an 8.96 at 151 MPH, a new personal best, and a new Modern HEMI Ram record.
