The Bradenton Motorsports Park staff is reeling today after the tragic loss of one of its own.
Daniel “Chaps” Stone, 56, was working the shutdown area of the racetrack during qualifying for the U.S. Street Nationals Friday evening when the Pro 275 machine of Paul Major experienced a mechanical malfunction and struck Stone at a high rate of speed. Paramedics, already on scene providing emergency services for the event, attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. Manatee County deputies responded to the scene at 7:40 p.m. and found that Stone had died at the scene.
Bradenton Motorsports Park staff concluded racing activities for the evening, and the National Hot Rod Association says it will be conducting an investigation into the vehicle malfunction. Stone was reportedly helping to guide drivers around the turnoff, when Major’s machine ran off the end of the raceway into the field beyond its terminus.
Said Bradenton Motorsports Park in a statement via social media: “Today when you pull into BMP, be kind and be patient. It will not be easy but together we will get through this and we will make our boy proud and finish this amazing race. Racers, let’s give my main man a great show today!”
“Today we race for Chaps!” said event announcer Lee Sebring. “This is gonna’ be tough for all of the employees and anyone that knew Chaps he would do anything for ya! God give me the strength to finish this amazing event. Hug someone today, doesn’t matter who it is. Please be patient with the crew today as we are all mourning.”
Added former NMCA and NMRA starter T.J. Bailey: “Chaps always met me with a smile and a hug. Chaps always pushed us through in a positive manner no matter the challenges. If you knew Chaps you know exactly what I’m talking about. Chaps was amazing at just about everything including being a loving husband and father to his amazing family.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to help offset the funeral costs for Stone’s wife of 25 years and his his three children that were left behind.
