Video: Brent Self’s Wild Explosion And Fire At Outlaw Armageddon!

Outlaw Armageddon was supposed to be an event where Brent Self made a statement with the new combination is his Camaro; instead, it ended with catastrophic engine failure and a devastating fire. This type of accident would put many racers out for months, but Self plans on having his F-body ready for Redemption 9.0 in September.

Self was positioned to challenge for the Small Tire class title at Outlaw Armageddon with his ProCharged Camaro, but when the number six injector failed on his big-block Chevy, all hell broke loose and his weekend took a turn for the worse. As the engine began to come apart it erupted into a giant fireball and Self did everything he could to keep the Camaro off the wall. To say his driving job was outstanding under pressure is an understatement when you look at the SpeedVideo footage of the incident.

Here's the damage to the block from the lifted head and fire.

If you listen to Self’s account of what happened, things could have ended up much worse for him.

“Around 2.5 seconds into the run when the injector failed it caused the motor to lean out and lift the head when I pedaled it … that’s when things got interesting. I pulled the parachute but the cable hung and this was all happening as the car was filling with smoke and fire. About this time my leg started to get really hot so I decided it was time to get out of the car in a hurry. I was unbuckling and had the door open before the car even stopped.”

Self’s charred Camaro hadn’t even cooled off from the fire before he jumped on social media working on getting parts for the rebuild to get back on the track as quickly as possible.

“Jody Hadley already has the car back at his shop working to get all the damaged parts off and getting the wiring redone. Lavern is getting ready to mount the new body panels as soon as Jody is done with everything. Justin’s Performance Center along with Kuntz & Company Race Engines are stepping up big time to help get us back for Redemption 9.0 in September.”
