The nitrous oxide-aided machine of Khalid Balooshi may have won the war in the NHRA Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series in 2011, but the turbocharged contingent proved an overwhelming force late in the season, leaving many to wonder whether they’d get “whacked” by the NHRA and if so, what the rules might look like to bring parity in 2012. Well, all of those discussions on what could or should be done were brought to a close this week with the release of the NHRA Pro Mod regulations for the new year, containing a number of adjustments targeted at keeping the turbocharged, supercharger, and nitrous cars on the same page.
For starters, turbocharged entries are limited to a maximum of 526 cubic inches – a reduction from previous years – and perhaps the biggest note is that of a spec 88mm turbocharger that will be mandated for all competitors. These turbos will be manufactured by Precision Turbo & Engine, utilizing turbine housing part number 10301-XXX and compressor wheel part number A24288C. As a spec part, this is the only turbocharger and internal components that will be approved for competition, and modifications to the turbo are of course expressly prohibited.
The minimum weight for the turbo entries has increased 50 pounds, from 2,650 up to 2,700. At the same time, the nitrous and supercharged cars, which were both relatively equal in performance on the average, will remain the same at 2.425 and 2,650, respectively. The rule changes, as always will go into effect January 1, 2012 and additional adjustments to promote parity will made as necessary during the season.
