Nitrous oxide-aided Pro Modifieds have come a long way over the last few seasons with the inception of the ADRL Pro Nitrous division, and while the age-old combination isn’t garnering anywhere near the attention that the new kid on the block – the turbocharged entries – has, the bottle-fed racers have nonchalantly gone about their business. That is, if you can call winning the first two events on the NHRA Pro Mod schedule, the 2011 NHRA championship, and some truly remarkable elapsed times in legal and outlaw trim “nonchalant”.
On Friday night, Doug Reisterer, regarded as one of the toughest nitrous racers in the country, powered his way to a unbelievable 3.759-second elapsed time at 193.49 miles per hour during the Texas Outlaw Pro Mods event at the Texas Raceway in Kennedale.
That mighty impressive performance is just .031-seconds off the track record set by “The Madman” Frankie Taylor in his supercharged entry, and to our recollection, is the third quickest pass by a nitrous-aided doorslammer in history – second only to the 3.746 and 3.754 laps recorded by Burton Auxier at the ADRL Speedtech U.S. Drags IV at the Virginia Motorsports Park in Richmond last August. Reisterer had earlier gone a 3.80.
Of course, the run is made all the more impressive by the fact that Reisterer is running a car with some age to it (at least by Pro Nitrous standards) and without the deep pockets of some of his counterparts. Oh, and the fact that a ‘hun” or two was given up with the big wiggle at around half track.
Will we see a nitrous car in the 3.60’s this year? It’s a longshot, but with the right conditions, don’t bet against it.
