Not everyone is interested in creating a crossbreed type of vehicle using an LS1 — people like Greg Snider believe in using the same manufacturer for the engine and chassis. Snider’s creation is a gnarly 1998 Dodge Dakota that uses the engine from a late-model Dodge Challenger Hellcat. The Hellcat Dakota may look like your average pickup, but it’s more than capable of beating most muscle cars at the track.
Snider’s Dakota started life like many others, with a workhorse 5.2-liter V8 under the hood, but it was backed by a five-speed transmission, so it had some pep in its step. The truck was hot-rodded out by Snider and eventually received a 392 cubic-inch modern HEMI, which made it pretty quick…but Snider wanted more horsepower.
One day on Facebook Marketplace, Snider found a smoking deal on a Hellcat drivetrain that was in a Dodge Challenger. Snider jumped at the chance to purchase the entire driveline and brought it home to begin the swap process. It took some serious garage engineering to get everything to fit, but Snider made it happen and was able to keep the Dakota looking pretty much stock. The only way you would know there’s some serious Hellcat horsepower in play is when Snider pops the hood of the Dakota to show off the neatly packaged mill under the hood.
Drag Racing and Car Stuff captured Snider and the Hellcat Dakota in action at Milan Dragway recently. Once Snider got ahold of the track, the Dakota ran an impressive 10.32 at 139 mph, so there’s definitely some 9-second potential in this nasty little pickup.
