Pro Stock’s Tanner Gray Reportedly Headed To NASCAR In 2019

Per information obtained by Autoweek and reported on Monday evening, third-generation professional drag racer and current NHRA Pro Stock points leader Tanner Gray will transition back to stock car racing in 2019, bringing to a close his short two-year career and ending weeks of rumors and speculation.

As recently as the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis — an event he won for the first time — Gray would neither confirm nor deny his move to NASCAR, noting only that “we’ll see” and asserting his present focus on winning the NHRA Pro Stock championship.

Autoweek reporter Matt Weaver confirms that Gray will drive for DGR-Crosley, a Mooresville, North Carolina-based NASCAR driver development team owned by former Monster Energy Cup Series driver David Gilliland and Crosley Brands CEO Bo LeMastus. DGR-Crosley competes in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, ARCA Racing Series, and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series — there is no word yet on which series Gray will land in. The DGR-Crosley website specifically seeks young drivers like 19-year old Gray who bring funding to the table for its turn-key development teams.

Winner of two of the last three national events and six in all this season, Gray entered the Countdown as the No. 1 seed and has extended his advantage to 52 points on the heels of his win Sunday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals in St. Louis.

Gray got his start in racing in Junior Dragsters before driving an array of dirt and pavement circle track cars, including mini sprints, outlaw karts, 360 sprint cars, and midgets, before moving to late model stock cars in 2016. Gray’s younger brother, Taylor, is also charting a path in oval racing behind the wheel of asphalt late models for Lee Faulk Racing and Development.

Gray, who has not publicly commented on his plans nor responded to requests by Autoweek for confirmation, issued recently what was perhaps a semi-vailed hint at his future racing endeavors, with a new shirt emblazoned with the words “The Final Countdown.”
