Rubbin’s Racin’…Well, Maybe Not In A Pro Mod

American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Pro Extreme competitors Randy Merick and Jim Phillips got far more cozy with one another than either would have preferred during this weekend’s Gateway Drags at the World Wide Technology Raceway just outside St. Louis.

In the opening round of eliminations, Merick and Phillips were racing alongside one another in the left and right lanes, respectively, when Merick’s 1979 Corvette crossed the centerline and struck the driver’s side of Phillips’ 1968 Camaro; the unintended contact sent Phillips and his “Big Nasty” machine up on two wheels as he put his driving talents to work to save his racecar. Merick, meanwhile, was putting on a show of his own, as the Corvette spun more than one full revolution and slid to a stop in Phillips’ lane. Amazingly, despite the contact at such a high-acceleration part of the run, neither driver so much as scraped a guardrail and each incurred only minor body damage. Phillips, the winner by way of the first-or-worst rule, returned in the next round but fell to Frankie Taylor.
