For years sportsman and bracket racers have been wishing for a suitable alternative to the longstanding “HRA’s” of the sport, who they believe have to some extent, lost site of the average racer and therefore don’t act in the best interest of the hand that feeds them.
The racers have collectively discussed it, and they’ve even out on one-off events to rival another “HRA” event, but no weight has been behind a real effort to start a grassroots series with the legitimate potential of success. That is until now. Maybe.
Multi-time champion sportsman and big money ET bracket racer Scotty Richardson, whose talents – and his five NHRA world championships including two in the same season – earned him a coveted spot on the NHRA’s Top 50 Drivers list in 2001, was the feature guest this week on the Speed Scene Live internet/radio show, where he made the blockbuster unveiling of a new sportsman racing sanctioning body run by the racer and intended for the racer.
“With the help of K&N Filters and several sponsors, we’re actually starting a new association just for sportsman racers,” Richardson told the Speed Scene Live team. “But this isn’t just for the racers, but anyone that likes to go to the races and tinker around with their cars.”
While additional details are said to be forthcoming in the next few weeks, Richardson indicated the series will officially launch in April.
“The whole thing here is that companies and race tracks and racers are very important, and what we’re going to do is actually give back to the racers that support drag racing and buy any kind of aftermarket products. We’re going to give the sponsorships back to them rather than sticking the money in our pockets.”
“We’re really building an association that’s built by the three main ingredients of the sport; putting companies, fans, and racers in a joint effort to create new racers coming aboard.”
For those unfamiliar with Richardson, in addition to his five NHRA championships, he’s also accumulated more than 30 NHRA national event wins, multiple division titles, one IHRA championship and three in the B&M Series and is one of the winningest big money ET bracket racers in history. He also operates the Scotty Richardson Drag Racing School, which aims to educate new racers just like those this proposed new series targets.
