There’s something to be said about a race car that’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing — the cars that are commonly referred to as “sleepers.” If a vehicle looks like it can take your grandmother to church on Sunday, but has the ability to drag around just about anything it comes across, then you know you’ve got one on your hands.
So what makes the betsy sleeper? A rough looking wagon with a hit of nitrous, a pickup truck with a giant turbo, or how about a little six-banger Holden that puts down over 700 horsepower to the wheels?
Aussie Paul Coles from Pro Street Automotive took a little Holden FC that looks mild but loves to run wild, fitted it with a boosted 202 cubic inch engine, transformed it into a race car, and the end result is the badass ride you see here that almost looks right at home in granny’s driveway.
Those lucky enough to travel to Australia get treated to their pretty diverse car scene. Ford has been in the country since the 1960’s and so has Holden, and they make some pretty neat cars. The Holden FC is a series of small cars that ranged in everything from a sedan to a panel van, and these little guys came with small engines that made less than 150 horses and were just standard transportation.
Paul Coles took his mild mannered classic standard transportation and turned it into a boosted monster. The 202 cubic inch engine that rests between the fenders is a stock block and sees upwards of 30 pounds of boost on a typical pass. Helping the car stay alive is the mechanical injection system that feeds the six-banger a nice diet of race grade alcohol. The power is put down through a Powerglide transmission and set of slicks.
The video provided by Full Boost shows how softly this FC walks until Paul hits the loud pedal. This thing sounds like a diesel as it builds boost and then the magic happens. When this car leaves it really LEAVES, rearing up like a wild stallion out of the gates and marching all over the place. Paul’s best pass in this thing is a 9.80 at 138 MPH…clearly no slouch.
