It’s become a bit of a tradition for somebody to try to fight the laws of gravity at Duck X Production’s tandem radial events held each spring and fall at South Georgia Motorsports Park. Until now, it’s been a Mustang-only flight pattern, but Saturday, Dewayne Mills and his Golden Gorilla Camaro joined those who will live in infamy as a “Flying car from SGMP”.
Mills, running the third qualifying session Saturday morning, was around 250′ into what appeared to be a solid 4.0-second pass when the front wheels lifted from the track surface. They held a foot and a half off the ground for a brief moment, just long enough to give you time to think “it’s just gonna hang there”, when the nose suddenly rockets skyward, standing the car nearly vertical. At it’s peak altitude, not even the parachutes were touching the ground.

Unfortunately, gravity has no discretion for beautiful first Generation Camaro and the car returned violently to the SGMP surface, catching the top of the retaining wall on the way down. The car skidded to a halt, and after a tense moment, Mills emerged from the car under his own power. By all reports on various social media, Dewayne was unhurt, proving that the safety measures and equipment required served their purposes well. As always, driver safety is priority number one, and we were very glad to hear Mills is okay.
We certainly hate to see one of the quicker cars in Radial vs the World wiped out of competition this early in the season, but Mills is likely already making arrangements to either have the Gorilla repaired, or to secure another car for the 2015 season. Either way, I doubt we have seen the last of the Mills team in Radial vs the World.
