Jake and Josh Blain campaign their Blain Brothers Racing twin-turbo Mustang in the world of No-Time racing and have made a name for themselves as a tough team to beat. This past weekend they decided to run against the best in No Prep at the KOTS (King of the Streets) event at Great Lakes Dragway in the Senior Class to see how they stacked up. But things didn’t go as planned when the car burst into flames during a round three matchup, forcing Jake to bail out of the car while it was still in motion.
The fateful pass began like any other until the top-end when all hell broke loose after an ill-timed mechanical failure.
“An injector O-ring blew out causing alcohol to spray all over the engine bay and on the headers. causing the fire. The engine looks to be intact and turns over … the only thing we can see damage-wise is a few injector O-rings that are split and hanging out,” Jake says.
As the fire began to intensify, Jake decided to actually bail out of the car before it came to a stop. “I pulled the chutes and hit the fire suppression system right when the problems started. I jumped out of the car around the quarter-mile mark and the car hit the walls with no driver. I wasn’t going to burn to death in my car … it was just getting too hot and I couldn’t breathe,” Jake explains.
This incident could have been much worse for the Blain’s, but thankfully the safety gear did its job and Jake did what he could to help get the car stopped. “We’re assessing the damage now and it’s not as bad as it looks. Everything appears to be good from the stock framerail back. The front bars are tweaked but nothing horrible. All the composite body panels are junk, the wiring is gone and some of the electronics are questionable,” Jake says.
Even after such a frightening accident, the team is already moving forward with repairs to the car for next season. “Project campfire is already on the road to recovery. We will have it down to a bare chassis shortly. I’m very humbled by the response from our friends, family, and fans,” Jake says.
