Frank Mewshaw, the 2010 NMCA Super Street 10.5W champion, hasn’t exactly had luck go his way over the season and change since placing the No. 1 on his Pontiac Trans Am, and the struggles continued last weekend at Commerce in a crushing way when he found himself upside down at the conclusion of his semifinal matchup with Eric LaFerriere.
Mewshaw, who qualified No. 3 with a stellar 6.668 at 214.38 miles per hour, had worked his way through eliminations, opening the day with a lap of 6.67-seconds to defeat Mark Wells before an easy competition single when Steve George couldn’t make the call. That set up the match with LeFerriere that didn’t quite end the way Mewshaw would’ve preferred.
As you can see in the just-released video of the incident from the Motor Mania TV crew, Mewshaw was well out on LeFerriere’s machine when his bright yellow Pontiac made a move to the centerline that he’d be unable to recover from.
Despite sliding through the traps sideways and on the brakes, Mewshaw still recorded a 6.82 – ahead of LeFerrieres’ 6.78 in the other lane thanks to a killer. 004 reaction time.
As reported by our own Rob Coassack in attendance providing coverage of the NMRA/NMCA All Star Nationals, damage to Mewshaw’s Trans Am appeared to be largely cosmetic and Mewshaw himself was unscathed other than a bruised pocketbook. A torn up race car is certainly nothing anyone wants to see even for their worst enemy, but fortunately, Mewshaw came away from the high-speed incident safely and that’s priority number one.
Our best wishes to Mewshaw and his team on getting back out there and chasing that second championship as soon as possible.
