There’s nothing wrong with wanting to put your driving prowess on display at the track, whether that’s showing how great a light you can cut, or that you can take the stripe like a thief in a bracket race.
However, racers typically don’t like to find themselves in a situation where they have to display their ability to mere survive — especially past half-track when the car is beginning in speed. But Australian racer Jason Payne had to put his full toolbox of skills on display recently at Willowbank Raceway when his Nissan had major issues.
Payne’s R32 Nissan Skyline is no joke, this car has a nasty Godzilla Motorsports-built RB 3.2 liter engine under the hood that receives boost from a Garrett GTX turbo. The Skyline absolutely flies, with a best of 7.42 at 187 mph, with 60-foot times in the 1.18-second range — so the car can make some steam in a hurry.
On this pass, Payne’s Skyline appears to be well on its way to another amazing 7-second pass when things literally go sideways out of the blue for no reason. The car makes a big move towards the right, collecting the timing blocks and crossing into the opposing lane in front of Payne’s opponent, while pitching back and forth violently down the track. Somehow, Payne is able to keep his car off the wall, rubber side down, and only managed to destroy a few foam timing blocks, much to the enjoyment of the roaring crowd.
The in-car view confirms what Payne revealed on Facebook: the intercooler ruptured during the pass, putting liquid down under the tires and setting the whole ride into motion.
