For the last handful of years, promoter Donald “Duck” Long’s wild and rowdy “Lights Out” radial and small tire races at the South Georgia Motorsports Park have set the proverbial stage for the new racing season in terms of performance and bragging rights. After a long winter hibernation in which racers update, upgrade, rebuild, or build anew, it’s only natural that the first event of the season – under cool early spring conditions no less – provides the opportunity for racers to show the numbers that message board keyboard jockeys have debated all winter long.
Coming in to last weekend’s “Lights Out 3,” one of the big questions on the minds of many was whether an Outlaw Drag Radial machine – or even multiple cars – could break into that elusive 4.20 zone. Despite the absence of the class killer David Wolfe these days, there are still certainly plenty of contenders for the prize.
For those who followed along with DRAGZINE’s coverage of the rain-shortened Lights Out 3, the 4.20 barrier didn’t fall – but the racers sure tickled it.
Outlaw Radial standout Kevin Fiscus, who not only announced a brand new partnership with fellow competitor Josh Klugger during the offseason, but also dropped a monstrous new 632-inch “Thor” Gen II Proline motor under the hood, nonchalantly blasted to a new official Outlaw Radial record pass of 4.325 at 185 MPH during the Saturday morning Radial vs. The World qualifier, establishing himself as the man to beat in the category on a race day which unfortunately, would not come. Fiscus wasn’t alone, however, as the heavy hitting Steve Jackson was just a tick back at 4.328.
No doubt the 20’s are going to come this year, it’s just a matter of who and when at this point. Our thanks to TheRacingVids for once again capturing this awesome footage.
