Veteran NHRA Top Fuel pilot Larry Dixon was uninjured in a terrifying crash this morning during the third session of qualifying at the Amalie Oil Gatornationals at the Auto-Plus Raceway in Gainesville when his dragster folded in half near the finish line stripe.
Dixon, who was sitting sixth in the qualifying order with his 3.851-second effort on Friday, was racing alongside Doug Kalitta when, near the 800-foot mark, the chassis bowed up forward of the drivers footbox. The sudden loss of front end downforce from the severing of the front end and wings sent the back half of the chassis sailing through the air, before crashing down hard onto the pavement and slamming into the wall.
What remained of the chassis — with Dixon strapped in — came to a stop in the shutdown area alongside the wall and Dixon was able to climb from the car under his own power.
Dixon knows such a situation all too well, as back in 2000 in Memphis, he went though a very similar accident that still makes drag racing highlight reels to this day.
