In addition to being one of the sports’ great drivers, chassis builder Larry Larson may also be one of the most diverse. He’s won a national event in Top Sportsman, nearly won in Competition Eliminator once with his street legal Nova, has five Drag Week titles, a Rocky Mountain Race Week crown, has been in the fives in Pro Modified trim, and most recently, won a Mustang/F-body meet in Kansas City, just because.
So what’s next? How about no-prep racing.
That’s right. Larson, in his 4,000-horsepower, five-second Chevrolet S-10, hauled north to the I-29 Dragway in Pacific Junction, Iowa to take part in his first-ever no-prep race, which was being promoted as part of the annual Ice Cream Cruise race and car show.
Using some impressive finesse of the throttle, including stepping on and off the loud pedal several times to tip-toe the twin-turbo pickup down the I-29 eighth-mile, Larson easily outran his first three opponents before losing by a matter of inches in the final round to a 710-inch, nitrous-equipped Monte Carlo. You’ll notice, though, that Larson never took the dicey surface that he was racing on lightly, as his hand remained on the parachute lever the entire 660-feet in case the truck began to lose traction or wander around. But, he says he will be back for more no-prep racing in the future, and if we were placing bets, we’d say he’ll be much harder to beat the second time around.
