Qualifying Notes Final Session

Pro Stock Motorcycle

The motorcycle contingent surprised everyone in the hot afternoon session as the top spot traded places in back-to-back-to-back runs. Andrew Hines took the spot and was immediately followed by David Hope that eclipsed him before Hector Arana stole the pole with a 6.913 at 193.96 miles per hour.

Pro Stock

Warren Johnson was able to hold on to the bump spot going into eliminations as those outside the field struggled to make a lap quick enough to make the show in the heat and humidity.

Sweden’s Jimmy Alund improved again in the final session with a great 6.736 at 205.76 but failed to make the program on Sunday.

Larry Morgan struggled all weekend to get a handle on his Lucas Oil Mustang and came up short of making the Pro Stock field with a 6.733 best.

Top Fuel

Larry Dixon solidified his top qualifying effort in the final session with low ET of the round at 3.913 alongside Brand Bernstein’s slowing tire-hazing 4.332.

Aussie Dave Grubnic made his best run of the weekend in this final session, a 4.007 at 305.70 miles per hour to move up 5 spots to #10.

Local favorite Bob Vandergriff Jr. will start from the top half of the field in tomorrows eliminations with a best of 3.961 at 288.27 miles per hour.

Funny Car

Ashley Force Hood held on to the spot to finish out qualifying and goes into race day in great shape where she will face Jeff Diehl.

Paul Lee and the Jim Dunn Racing team struggled all weekend to get a grip on this tough race track. Lee pulled out a 4.62 in the final session to bump in to the field before being bumped back out in the next pair by Jeff Diehl.

Pro Modified Round 1 Eliminations

Troy Coughlin came out on the winning end of a great all-nitrous battle with Dennis Radford, 6.014 to 6.074.

Michael Gullqvist advanced to tomorrows Round 2 after Ed Hoover got out of shape early and was forced to lift.

Danny Rowe sent Khalid Al Balooshi packing in the opening round with an ultra tight battle all the way to the stripe, 6.03 to 6.06 and almost dead-even at the tree.

Brad Personett was on a wail of a pass in the opening round alongside Mike Janis, going 3.97 to the eighth mile. Unfortunately, he left the red bulb lit in his dust and lifted to a 6.16 to Janis’s shutoff 8.57.

Chip King was able to make repairs following his trip to the beach – thanks in due part to the invention of duct tape – but didn’t have enough for Jay Payne’s new Mustang, falling 6.01 to 6.10.

For our first 2010 Full Throttle Series NHRA same-day coverage we take you to Atlanta as the NHRA closes in on the half way mark of the season.  In addition, we will be bringing you event coverage from the Get Screened Pro Mod Series as well.

Well folks, they don’t call it Hotlanta for nothin’.  The sun is bearing down on Atlanta Dragway, but it certainly hasn’t dampened the excitement for this weekends Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals.  The temperature here is currently 83 degrees with a track temperature of 121 degrees.  The professional qualifing action is set to get underway in just a couple hours, with the Get Screen America Pro Mod Challenge getting things started at 3:15 PM EST.  There are a multitude of part-time, but very strong contending nitro teams here this weekend that are sure to cause some trouble for the tour regulars.

Friday Morning Pit Notes

Fan favorite Melanie Troxel is here competing in both Funny Car and in Pro Modified. Despite being a part-time team, the In-N-Burger flopper is as tough as any car in the field on race day.

Former IHRA standout Terry McMillen is here competing in Top Fuel with his Amalie Motor Oils-backed mount.

Local boy Bob Vandergriff Jr. is here competing at his home track with C&J Energy Services adorning the panels of his car.

Bobby Lagana Jr. and team made the trek down from Scarsdale, NY to compete in Top Fuel this weekend. Lagana has run well on the IHRA trail in 2010 under the new Chicago style format, and with the backing of Tire Kingdom, is running a limited schedule of NHRA national events in addition to the full IHRA schedule.

T.J. Zizzo is another of the fan favorite teams that competes part time on the NHRA tour. The PEAK/Herculiner team is making their first visit to Atlanta Dragway, and their second of seven events on their 2010 schedule.

Jay Payne will debut his brand new Sinned Customs-built 2010 Mustang that we reported on earlier this week in the GSA Pro Mod Challenge here in Atlanta. Testing after the St. Louis race netted mid 5.80 numbers, which if that’s any indication, Jay should be tough this weekend.

Round 1 Qualifying Notes

Top Fuel

Larry Dixon grabbed the provisional top spot in Top Fuel during a tough first session in the heat with a 3.86. Only two cars dipped into the 3’s as everyone struggled to get a handle on the hot racetrack.

Cory Mac slid into the second spot with his 3.92 alongside Larry Dixon.

Steve Torrence, like many in the hot, humid conditions, struck the tires early in the run.

Funny Car

Robert Hight led the first session with a relatively strong 4.182, given the conditions.

John Force legged his Castrol Mustang through the finish after hazing the tires early to a 4.51 at 259 miles per hour.

Ron Capps made a stellar 4.19 lap in the opening round to grab the second spot going into tonight’s second session.

Pro Stock

Pro Stock kingpin Mike Edwards uncharacteristically lost an engine on the top end of his opening qualifying lap, slowing to a 7.099 at 152.45 miles per hour.

Rogder Brogdon is back in action here in Atlanta with his Pistonator GXP repaired after a harrowing crash two weeks ago. Brodgon got all kinds of loose in the first session and coasted to a 10.25 lap.

Warren Johnson is hoping for a strong run here at his home track to follow up his surprising win in St. Louis. WJ got things off on the right foot, finishing the first session in seventh with a strong 6.707.

Pro Stock Motorcycle

Eddie Krawiec slid into the second spot behind provisional leader Hector Arana with a stout 6.976.

Pro Modified

Michael Gullqvist powered his way into the fourth spot during a tough first session at the wheel of the R2B2 Camaro with a 6.033 lap.

Tim Tindle made a nice and clean 6.055 pass to place solidly in the Pro Mod field going into the late afternoon session.
